tarot at a glance
Tarot also works online, of course. Tarot is a deck of 78 playing cards, often referred to as the card oracle. The 78 cards of the tarot set vary greatly in meaning, and their meaning also depends on whether these divination cards are assigned to the major or minor arcana. The Major Arcana numbers 22 trumps from 0 to 21, while the Minor Arcana has 56 suit cards, ten of which are numbers, plus four face cards, each of four different suits. The word "arcana" derives from the Latin arcanum, which means something like "mystery".
Tarot cards have a long history, long before tarot was offered online, and legend has it that it may have originated in ancient Egypt. This legend says that in the face of the impending destruction of the empire, a way was sought of how thousands of years of knowledge could be preserved. After surviving for a long time, it was finally decided to perpetuate the old knowledge in the form of drawings on playing cards, as it was assumed that play and vice would prevail against all odds. Playing cards have been known in Europe since at least the end of the 14th century. The cards of today's tarot probably developed from the first 52 playing cards that spread from the Islamic world to Europe and correspond to today's minor arcana.
MARSEILLE-TAROT
The so-called Marseille Tarot is one of the oldest and most popular tarot decks ever. Another name that is also frequently used in Germany for the tarot deck is "Tarot de Marseille". The motifs of this special tarot deck originated in France in the 16th century and is named after the port city of Marseille in the south of France, since a large part of the card production took place here. The Marseille Tarot, more broadly, includes a number of closely related decks that are considered to be indicative of the design of other subsequent Tarots.
WAITE TAROT
The Waite Tarot is also a popular and widespread tarot deck. This special tarot goes back to the English occultist Arthur Edward Waite and was implemented by the artist Pamela Colman Smith. Since the tarot deck was published by Rider & Son publishers in 1910, the tarot was also known as the Rider-Waite Tarot. Both Arthur Edward Waite and the artist Pamela Colman Smith were considered to belong to the magical society of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, which is also reflected in the design of the tarot deck. This reflects the esoteric teachings of the society.
CROWLEY THOTH TAROT
The Crowley Thoth Tarot should also be known to many people. It was conceived by the English occultist and writer Aleister Crowley. The artist Frieda Harris then put his ideas into practice. Crowley was also a member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and spent his life dedicated and passionate about the occult and the important questions of life. The first depiction of Crowley's tarot cards appeared in his 1944 Book of Thoth. In this book, not only were all the cards printed in black and white, there were also six color illustrations.
As already mentioned, a complete tarot deck consists of 78 cards. The cards each have their own meaning, which results from the specific question and the individual interpretation of the figures, colors, objects and symbols that have been placed. There are 22 main cards and 56 cards, each associated with the four ranks of Staves, Swords, Cups and Coins. As already mentioned, the tarot cards must always be interpreted in the context of the question, but some basic interpretations can be mentioned. For example, the high priestess stands for the soul and intuition or the ruler for the masculine, a father figure and for strength and vitality.
THE MAJOR ARKANAS OF ONLINE TAROT
The 22 main cards in online tarot are also known as trump cards or the major arcana. The 22 cards and their symbols are very different from the rest of the playing cards. When interpreting the Major Arcana, the focus is always on the specific question and the current life situation of the questioner. This can lead to the situation that the same cards have different meanings for two different people. The 22 main cards of the Major Arcana include, for example, the Mage, the High Priestess, the Empress, the Lovers, Death, the Moon or the Hermit. Death does not stand for the end of life, but can indicate the beginning of a new phase of life or a new beginning.
THE MINOR ARKANA IN ONLINE TAROT
The minor arcana consist of a total of 56 cards and are divided into four times fourteen of these cards in four different colors or rows. These four rows are Wands, Chalices, Swords and Coins.
A specific element is assigned to each of these four rows.
The bars symbolize the element fire, which stands for energy, success, commitment and creativity.
The Chalices are associated with the element of water and refer to the unconscious, feelings and different moods.
The swords stand for the element of air and are associated with freedom, the spiritual, knowledge or learning.
The coins embody the element earth and symbolize nature, the body, work and material things.
In order to be able to lay and read tarot cards, you have to deal intensively with the subject over a long period of time. It is therefore advisable to only seek advice from someone with sufficient experience in this regard. First you have to decide on a suitable deck and the right layout system in order to do justice to the specific question. Various laying systems are conceivable, which have different levels of complexity. There is laying with three cards, which is a suitable laying system, above all for beginners. In addition, "the Celtic cross", "the compass", "the cross" or "the love oracle" are popular laying systems.
